Mosquitoes are not just annoying. They carry a host of diseases ranging from West Nile Virus to Malaria. For many years, the answer to mosquito control was to spray and spray some more. However, there are ways of combating those pesky mosquitoes without having to poison yourself or your environment.

Create a pleasing environment for the predators of mosquitoes like predators include birds, bats, dragonflies, fish particularly the mosquitofish and guppy. Mosquitoes, just as most wildlife does, have natural predators. When you eliminate those predators through the spread of unnatural surroundings you allow the imbalance of the mosquito population. Some people hate bugs. It does not matter if they crawl, fly, bite, sting, or stink, they are disliked and there is nothing they can do to change it. Unfortunately, people often forget how beneficial insects can be. People do all they can to irradiate bugs from their homes and outdoor spaces, and while an infestation of anything should be treated as soon as possible, the occasional creepy-crawly may be making your home environment far more pleasant.

A lot of people are scared of spiders, but the truth is spiders do a lot of good. If you are trying to eliminate other bugs in your home, spiders are sure to do it. They weave their webs that trap flies and other nuisance bugs, creating a home in which there may be a few spiders, but bugs that are unsanitary will not be an issue.

If you are frightened by spiders and worried about their presence in your home, take some time to learn about what they do on a regular basis. Get up early one morning and hunt for fresh webs throughout your house. There are few things in nature that are more amazing than a complete web, covered with light dew, reflecting the light, and serving as a comfortable lair for your household spiders.

Dragonflies rarely scare people, but if you see too many of them it can be alarming. In some areas, dragonflies descend and seem like a buzzing army. Dragonflies usually do not make it indoors, but if you have them in your yard, you are sure to suffer from fewer mosquitoes and other nuisance bugs.

Dragonflies are also colorful and fun to watch. Kids love dragonflies, even if they are put off by other insects. They are larger than the average bug, but because they are attractive, people do not seem to mind. (more…)

Dragonfly Memoirs

Yellow striped hunter, Austrogomphus guerini, ...
Image via Wikipedia

Dragonflies have been wrongly accused of sewing children’s eyes close, striking livestock. They have been called the devil’s darning needles, water witches and snake doctors.

Unless you’re a small flying insect, there is nothing scary about dragonflies. They are actually our backyard friends and help out in making a garden wonderful.

They actually help out around the garden by gobbling up mosquitoes, flies, and gnats. Their larvae cleanses the pond scum and devour immature mosquitoes, diving beetles, and other water bugs.

Dragonflies are an indicator species, having them around the garden means that the ecosystem is healthy. This is specially true in their aquatic stage and when they are on the prowl of freshwater ponds and streams.

To keep them feeding and flying around our gardens and ponds, add water lilies. A dragonfly can lay several thousand eggs a day in water or several hundred in the stems of floating-leaf plants. Before long you will have dragonfly nymphs swimming about in the pond.

During mating, the male dragonfly clasps the female. She bends to pick up the sperm at the front of his abdomen. Dragonflies lay their eggs in the water or in water plants.

After the eggs have been laid, the nymphs will start feeding, using their specialized hinged lower lip to catch pray. The skin of a grown nymph splits open and an adult dragonfly emerges, that is the life cycle of a dragonfly. (more…)
