Making a Lush Garden for Dragonflies

Dragonflies eat insects, but you still want to have a lush garden to attract insects for them to eat—and for you and your human guests to enjoy. You can choose native plants or just add a few colorful budleias to attract butterflies, too.

Of course, you will want a natural pool or water garden if possible. If not. keeping your lawn well watered can create puddles to attract mosquitoes and other dragonfly food to lay their eggs. Puddles will also attract butterflies.

One thrifty way to water your lawn or garden, especially in desert areas or during a drought, is a drip irrigation system. Plants get just what they need, right at their roots, without wasting water through evaporation.

Another advantage of drip irrigation is that you never have to walk through a sprinkler unless you want to. You can still add a puddle, pool or water garden to attract more insects, and we recommend it.

You could, for example, add a half-barrel of water plants on your patio. That would attract mosquitoes to lay eggs, and attract dragonflies to feed on them. If a few mosquitoes do manage to lay eggs in your water garden, then the larvae mature into adult mosquitoes and can fly, the dragonflies will eat them up.

In a dusty climate or for some types of plants, lawn sprinklers work best. Sprinklers can wash off dust (making plants look better and allowing them to absorb more sunlight), discourage red spider infestations, and hydrate the whole plant. You can also add a single sprinkler (or more) to your drip irrigation system to provide puddles and add humidity to the air.

Whether you decide to build your own irrigation system or hire someone else to build it, you can purchase top quality irrigation supplies on line at a good price and have them shipped directly to your door.
