In the United States, finding and watching dragonflies and damselflies is a hobby like birding and butterflying.
Dragonfly-watching is known as oding, from the dragonfly’s Latin genus name, odonata. Here is a great site for those who are just getting started in odling, called Odes for Beginners.
Oding is especially popular in Texas, where 225 different species of odonates have been observed.
With care, and with dry fingers, oders can handle and release dragonflies. (That can also be done with butterflies, though it is not a good idea.)
