A New Challenge

I spent several days last season trying to track down the elusive Brilliant Emerald. I did have fleeting glimpses in unfamiliar surroundings, and the majority of places I visited were untidy, usually filthy, dark and dingy woodland ponds usually populated by urbanites.

If that wasn’t enough the BE prefers to patrol the darkest, inaccessible inlets of these ponds under overhanging trees, so finding them was only half the battle. Having finally located a reliable spot I spent several hours ‘attempting’ to capture the little sod as he appeared from under the branches to pass through my two square metres of canvas.

Wide open at f4.8, ISO 800 and 1/800 to combat the low light was against all my instincts, but I had to at least give it a go. So consider this a practice run…
