Azure damselflies, ovipositing in pond

The sun was out this afternoon so I went down to my garden pond to check out the damselflies. There were at least a dozen Azures (Coenagrion puella) on the wing, plus a couple of pairs mating and ovipositing.

This is a large crop because I couldn’t get close enough to them; it’s also poorly focused, but I wanted to show the process. The female is laying eggs in the pond; the male clasps her behind the head to guard her from other males.

I got rather wet taking this and almost had to abandon one of my wellies in the mud!

Handheld, natural light.
