Banded Demoiselle (Calopteryx splendens)

View On Black

These are so similar to the Beautiful Demoiselles (Calopteryx virgo) it’s easy to confuse the two. Both as beautiful as one another, the Banded is identified by the dark shading across the center of the wings whereas the Beautiful had the dark shading throughout the wings.

The Banded Demoiselle prefers slow flowing muddy bottomed rivers and streams with open banks and adjoining meadows, whereas the Beautiful Demoiselle prefer fast flowing gravel or sandy bedded streams and rivers usually across heaths and moors and is more tolerant of shade.

So there you go. Happy Blue Monday everyone!
