Red-veined darter

Red-veined darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) male.

Best viewed On Black, Large

I was chasing this guy around the pond for 2 hours straight. He was very small (smaller than the Crocothemis erythraea‘s or Orthetrum brunneum‘s that usually frequent the pond) and I had a very hard time getting a decent capture of him. Very frustrating…

I got about 60 shots of him and chose the two I like best. This one showcases the features that make the species unique (red veins and blue bottom half of the eyes), while the other one is just a funny pose of him :-)

For this capture I had to manually adjust the focus on my nonSLR camera, because the autofocus couldn’t find the dragonfly with of all the grass around!
