I found this one today (22/Aug/06), perched right outside my house! OK, I live on the outskirts of the city (that is Iraklion, Crete, Greece), but I never thought I’d find a dragonfly there. There is a stream nearby, but at this time of year it should be dry. Oh, well, I think I should check it out one of these days…

Anyway, this is a Sympetrum fonscolombii, no other European species has the red wing venation and blue bottom halves of the eyes (source:http://www.libellen.nl/europa/). You can tell it’s a male, from the secondary genitalia seen under the second abdominal segment (see note). This one is immature. Compare its colors with this fully-matured adult to see the difference.
