Southern Damselfly – Immature Female

Female Blue Damselflies are one of the more difficult areas of dragonfly ID – especially tenerals. I spent the winter actually reading my books and looked for those subtle differences.

Usually the main areas to look are S2 and S8/9, but the more reliable way with coenagrionidae is to look at the eye spot (the stripe between the eyes) and the pronotum (the plate behind the eyes.

Of course the more savvy of you could’ve looked on my latest blog entry :-)

Well done to Matthew and Frank for at least having a go. I must admit to being a tad disappointed Dennis didn’t have a go, but then he probably would’ve used the excuse ‘I haven’t seen one in the field’ :-)))
