Violet dancers (Argia fumipennis violacea)

Gibbs Gardens

There are three subspecies of Variable dancers and all are found in Georgia. The farther south you go, the darker they get – Black dancers being found in S. GA and FL. The lightest is Violet dancer in North Georgia – the guy on the left is a good example. The male in the center is so dark, I think from age, that he looks a lot like a Blue-tipped dancer. But I think he’s just an old Violet dancer. Here at home we get an intergrade between Violet & Smoky dancer subspecies.
